Start Biography

Dr. Bondarenko graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University with a Master's Degree in Biochemistry in 1986 and earned a Ph.D. from the Shemyakin Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry in 1992. His graduate research focused on regulation of one of the key enzymes of visual signal transduction, cGMP phosphodiesterase 6.

He completed two postdoctoral fellowships at Wayne State University and joined the faculty of the Pharmacology Department at UMDNJ in 2003 where he studied the molecular mechanisms of transcription in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In 2007, Dr. Bondarenko joined the faculty of Basic Sciences Department of Touro University Nevada to teach medical biochemistry in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Physician Assistant Studies programs.

Dr. Bondarenko has also taught students in the Master of Science in Medical Health Sciences (MHS) program since it was established in 2009.

  • Dr. Bondarenko is interested in finding a correlation between formation of tau aggregates in the brain of the individuals with dementia and their retinas. His preliminary data demonstrate a positive correlation between increased tau aggregates present in visual cortex of individuals with dementia and amounts of tau in retinal neuronal cells. By establishing a correlation between tau accumulation in retina and neurodegenerative disease it could be possible to do an early diagnosis of tau-related dementia by examination of retina for tau aggregates.
  • Dr. Bondarenko is also interested in genetic and epigenetic regulation of the cellular processes in response to such pathological conditions as hypoxia and cancer. By using the mouse as model organism he showed that transcriptional responses to induced acute hypoxia are different for different mice strains. A strain that is less susceptible to develop certain types of cancer had less variations in gene expression in response to hypoxia while a strain that is more susceptible to develop cancer has one order of magnitude more variations in gene expression in response to hypoxia.
  • Another project Dr. Bondarenko is actively engaged in is a search for antimicrobial compounds in lichens. A lichen of interest is Parmelia vagans that has been used in folk medicine for centuries to treat a variety of maladies including open wounds and inflammation. His lab has found that the extracts from Parmelia vagans has bactericidal properties. He is working on identification and characterization of bactericidal compounds found in lichen extract.
