Touro University Nevada Provides Vaccinations and Education During Pride Month
Touro University Nevada’s students worked to vaccinate the LGBTQ+ community and helped educate the campus community about the Rainbow Health Coalition (RHC) during Pride Month.
Celebrated every June to honor the 1969 Stonewell Uprising in New York City, Pride Month honors the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community and helps to bring awareness to the challenges they continue to face in society.
Mia Levine, a second-year student in the College of Osteopathic Medicine and President of the university’s RHC chapter, discussed the organization’s mission in a video posted to Touro’s social media accounts.
“We are here so LGBTQ students and allies can work together to provide compassionate care for all patients,” she said. “We are also here to help patients see they have allies in the healthcare field. We help educate our classmates about the unique needs of our communities, and to listen and learn from other groups who have historically had trouble accessing healthcare.”
On June 6, several students from the School of Physician Assistant Studies administered COVID-19 vaccines at the Henderson Equality Center as part of Henderson PrideFest 2021. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed four LGBTQ+ equity bills at the event.
“I was very excited to be able to participate in this event because it is very important for Touro to work to address the health needs of populations within the Las Vegas community that may have limited access to healthcare,” said David Richards, a first-year PA student. “Experiences like these continue to add positive associations between Touro University Nevada and healthcare access. They are of great benefit to us as students and the community.”
