Class of 2023 Begins Medical School Journey with Day of Service to Help Las Vegas Valley Residents
Touro University Nevada’s new osteopathic medicine students learned the importance of giving back to the community during their Day of Service on July 25.
Nearly 180 new students volunteered at local non-profits across the Las Vegas Valley, including the Arturo Cambeiro Senior Center, Spread the Word Nevada, Catholic Charities, Three Square, and Project 150.
“As healthcare providers, we’re going to be seeing patients on some of their worst days,” said Ryan Briggs, who spent his Day of Service stocking the food pantry at Catholic Charities. “Being able to get out and complete services for those less fortunate helps to develop that much-needed compassion.”
Students completed a variety of volunteer efforts during Day of Service, including cleaning and packaging books, organizing clothes, assisting senior citizens, and more.
“I think it’s important for future doctors to get involved in their community and learn about the different outreach programs taking place,” said Henderson native and Spread the Word volunteer Charice Sexton. “In preparation for medical school, it was really important for me to find a place where community service and outreach were important aspects. As a local, I think it’s great that Touro does this for the community.”
As part of Touro’s commitment to social justice, the Day of Service has provided new students the opportunity to give back to their new community. The tradition began in 2017 and has become the highlight to orientation week as students get to know their new classmates and for some, their new community.
“Day of Service really brings us together as new students and future physicians in Southern Nevada,” Sexton said. “That really appeals to me.”
