Touro University Nevada Holds Annual White Coat Ceremony for New Students
Nearly 300 students from Touro University Nevada were presented with their white coats as a symbol of their commitment to becoming quality healthcare professionals during a special ceremony with their friends and family in attendance.
“The White Coat ceremony is a symbolic event where our students begin their journey to become lifelong learners and empathetic, evidence-based practitioners,” said Dr. Ray Alden, Provost of Touro University Nevada.
Though the tradition of the White Coat ceremony began in the mid-1990’s, it has since been adopted by most medical schools across the country.
In total, 150 students from Touro’s College of Health and Human Services and 135 students from the College of Osteopathic Medicine received their white coats. While students from Touro’s School of Physician Assistant Studies, School of Physical Therapy, and College of Osteopathic Medicine continued the tradition of receiving their white coats, students from Touro’s School of Nursing and School of Occupational Therapy were also presented with their white coats for the first time.
Kalin Ashby, a second-year student from the School of Physical Therapy; and Toni Young, second-year student from the College of Osteopathic Medicine, provided the students with some words of wisdom during the ceremony.
“I challenge you to get outside of your comfort zone. Stretch yourself frequently and elevate those around you,” Ashby said. “You are more powerful and capable than you give yourself credit. I promise you that if you do this, you and those around you will be better for it.”
“The more you come out of your comfort zone, the more opportunities you will have,” Young echoed. “And don’t forget who you are right now. Don’t forget about your interests and hobbies and the little quirks that make you who you are. That is the person your patients want to see.”
