Touro University Nevada and Nevada State College Announce New Partnership to Promote Medical Health Sciences for Future Healthcare Students
Touro University Nevada (TUN) and Nevada State College (NSC) have entered into an agreement that will provide a pathway for students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare to participate in an accelerated double degree program which will allow them to receive a dual bachelor’s and master’s degree.
Following their junior year at NSC, selected students will matriculate into TUN as full-time Medical Health Sciences students. Before they begin their academic journeys at Touro, students will participate in a Summer Learning Enhancement Program that includes sessions on study skills, time management, medical terminology, the medical curriculum and basic science review. At the conclusion of their fourth year of study, students will graduate with a dual degree of Bachelor of Science from NSC and a Master of Health Sciences from TUN.
“Nevada continues to significantly lag behind other states in the number of physicians based on population. The end result of this partnership is that we will better serve students interested in pursuing careers in medicine and other healthcare professions and will better meet our state’s needs for these professionals,” said Shelley Berkley, CEO & Senior Provost of Touro University Nevada.
Students must meet certain criteria prior to being accepted into the program, including having a strong academic performance, involvement in undergraduate and high school activities, community service, and both knowledge and dedication to the fields of medicine and healthcare.
“Collaborating with Nevada State College on this partnership will help us develop future generations of students interested in medical and healthcare fields,” said Dr. Ray Alden, Provost of Touro University Nevada. “Whether these students choose to pursue a career in osteopathic medicine, physician assistant studies or the additional programs Touro offers, this partnership will streamline their academic journeys and help them achieve their academic goals.”
Participating students who are interested in entering TUN’s College of Osteopathic Medicine or School of Physician Assistant Studies will be guaranteed an interview as long as they maintain a certain GPA. The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) will not be required as part of the application process.
“By allowing qualified students to transition to Touro after their third year, and by waiving the MCAT requirement, many more of our under-represented, non-traditional students will see a clear pathway to their future in medicine,” said Bart Patterson, President of Nevada State College. “Through this partner program with Touro University Nevada, we are paving the way for medical school, physician assistant school, and many of the other professional programs Touro offers.”
