Touro University Nevada Partners With Victory Missionary Baptist Church to Show “Black Men in White Coats” for Juneteenth Event
The ‘Touro Nevada Stands for Justice’ committee partnered with Victory Missionary Baptist Church for a special presentation of “Black Men in White Coats” in celebration of Juneteenth.
‘Black Men in White Coats’ is a documentary highlighting the need for more African-American men in medicine. The Juneteenth event was attended by several members of the Southern Nevada community.
Hosted by the ‘Touro Nevada Stands for Justice’ subcommittee of the Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the university used the documentary as an opportunity to promote recruitment in all healthcare disciplines. Panelists ranging from cardiologists to respiratory therapists were in attendance to answer questions from 6th-12th grade students and their parents.
During last year’s Juneteenth event, more than 100 members of the Touro community peacefully marched in Downtown Henderson to City Hall where they were met by Mayor Debra March and Police Chief Thedrick Andres, who thanked them for marching for racial and social justice.
Since its inception last year, the Touro Nevada Stands for Justice series has expanded its programming to discuss the marginalization of countless populations in the U.S., including Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders, the LGBTQIA community, and more. Discussions have also included societal and cultural oppression that millions of people are facing around the world.
