More than 200 New Students Give Back to Community During “Day of Service”
More than 200 students from the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Medical Health Sciences program began their Touro University Nevada careers by giving back to the Southern Nevada community during “Day of Service.”
As part of the “Day of Service,” an event that concludes orientation week, students volunteered at several non-profit organizations across the Las Vegas Valley. The commitment to social justice is a key component to the university’s mission, and new students exemplified that during Day of Service.
Dacia Taylor, a new student in the School of Physician Assistant Studies, credited Touro’s commitment to community outreach as a reason why she decided to attend the university.
“I really like the sense of community here at Touro and I look forward to giving back while completing a rigorous PA program,” she said. “Being involved in the community and helping those less fortunate will help me get a better understanding of how to treat patients.”
Morgan Goodelman, a new student in the Masters of Medical Health Sciences program, appreciated her time volunteering at Opportunity Village during “Day of Service.”
“I used to work in the emergency room and saw a lot of people in need; people who didn’t have access to healthcare so they would use the E.R. as a resource because it was all they had available to them,” she said. “Being able to work with people who need extra help is an invaluable experience.”
During Day of Service, students volunteered at Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Spread the Word Nevada, the City of Henderson, the Boys and Girls Club, and Opportunity Village.
