Touro University Nevada opened a new student-led clinic at Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada (VMSN) as the two entities continue to expand on an already flourishing partnership.

Located near Las Vegas’s Historic Westside, the first-of-its kind multi-disciplinary, student-run clinic will provide free services to the underserved community.

“The need for healthcare in Southern Nevada’s underserved community is immense,” said Shelley Berkley, CEO and Senior Provost of Touro University Nevada. “Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada has worked valiantly to alleviate the lack of access to those in great need. Not only will this new student-run clinic make a further impact right here in our community, but it will also provide our students with valuable, first-hand patient-care experience.”

Touro’s physician assistant (PA) students have provided free services to Volunteers in Medicine patients for the last few years, but the new bi-monthly clinic will benefit students from multiple Touro programs as the university works to strengthen its interprofessional education mission.

“I love that Touro provides the opportunity to get hands-on experience in a clinic that will help us care for the underserved while working in a team of students from other healthcare fields,” said Riley Frenak, a second-year PA student. “This experience will undoubtedly make us more compassionate providers who know the importance of team-based medical care.”

“Expanding our relationship with Touro to enable more services to be provided to our neighbors in need is a win-win for all involved,” said Jaime Weller-Lafavor, CEO of Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada. “We are elated to have an educational environment that embraces our vision to ensure that every man, woman, and child in Southern Nevada has access to healthcare.”

The student-run clinic will operate twice a month, from 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. each night at VMSN’s Ruffin Family Clinic, 1240 North Martin Luther King Blvd., Las Vegas NV.
