University Honors Veteran Community In Annual Ceremony
Nov 12, 2020

Touro University Nevada held a special virtual ceremony to honor veterans from the Touro community in celebration of Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

Put together by the Veterans Day Celebration committee, the special tribute featured remarks from Shelley Berkley, CEO and Senior Provost; Rolando Flores, Associate Dean of Students and Registrar; Dr. Phil Tobin, Director of the School of Physician Assistant Studies; and Dr. Joe Hardy, Associate Dean of Clinical Education in the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Berkley discussed her role in bringing the first Veteran Affairs Clinic (VA) to the Las Vegas Valley when she served in the U.S. Congress.

“We owe a great debt to our veterans,” she said. “Year after year, our fellow citizens answer the call to keep us safe. We must remember that their families also make the sacrifice. They are quite instrumental in keeping this nation free. I am very grateful to them.”

Dr. Tobin, a retired Captain of the U.S. Air Force, called upon students to remember that veterans are important and have made many sacrifices.

“It’s important to remember that 22 veterans take their own lives every day,” he reminded those in attendance. “We will still have a problem with veteran suicide after COVID-19 is behind us.”

Dr. Hardy, a retired Major in the U.S. Air Force, discussed why it is so important to be kind to veterans.

“Hearing ‘thank you for your service’ literally touches your heart,” he said. “If you say that to a veteran, the reaction alone will allow you to know why we celebrate Veterans Day.”

The celebration closed with a special slideshow honoring members of the Touro community, and their family members, who served in the military.
